Platform term. Also written direct message, DMs, sliding into the DMs.
Coined by Twitter, which named its private messaging feature Direct Messages, and generalised from there to cover private messaging on any platform. It displaced "PM" (private message), which survives mainly on forums and Discord.
Works as both noun and verb — you can send a DM or DM someone. "Sliding into the DMs" describes initiating private contact with someone you do not know well, usually romantically, and carries a light, slightly cheeky connotation that makes it a poor phrase for business use. For brands, DMs are where the highest-intent conversations happen and where response time is judged most harshly.
The term itself is safe and standard. "Slide into the DMs" is the part to leave alone on a business account — it reads as flirtation regardless of intent.
Direct message — a private, one-to-one message on a social platform, as opposed to a public post or comment.
To message someone privately who you do not already know well, typically with romantic intent. It is deliberately casual and slightly cheeky, which is why it does not belong in business communication.
Most platforms filter messages from accounts you do not follow into a separate requests folder, which is easy to miss entirely. If you run a business account, checking that folder is worth building into a routine — genuine enquiries land there constantly.
