Where it comes from
App researcher Alessandro Paluzzi spotted the feature testing in Threads code in August 2026. Meta officially announced and launched Threads Gems on October 8, 2026 for US creators. The system uses an automated detection algorithm to select qualifying posts once per day.
How it is actually used
Used as an official recognition badge by Meta's automated algorithms to reward creators, brands, and public users. The system awards purple Gem icons based on unique perspective, multi-turn dialogue, and content originality. Creators who receive a Gem notification can choose whether to share or decline the public badge.
