Platform term. Also written hashtags, #.
Proposed by Chris Messina on Twitter in 2007 as a way of grouping conversations, and adopted by every major platform since. The symbol itself is much older, but this use of it is entirely a social media invention.
What hashtags actually do has narrowed considerably. On Instagram they now function mainly as categorisation signals rather than a discovery mechanism, and the platform has shifted toward keyword search in captions; the practical limit is far lower than the technical one. On TikTok they carry even less weight, and #fyp does nothing at all. On LinkedIn and X a small number still helps categorisation. The consistent modern advice is fewer and more specific: a tag with 2,000 posts is more useful than one with twenty million, where your post is invisible within seconds.
Safe. The mistake is not the word but the practice — a wall of thirty generic tags reads as spam and performs worse than three specific ones.
Fewer than most advice suggests. On Instagram, three to five specific tags now outperform a large block of generic ones. On TikTok they carry little weight either way.
As categorisation, yes. As a discovery mechanism they have weakened substantially, particularly on Instagram, which has shifted toward reading keywords in the caption itself.
No. TikTok has said directly that it does not influence distribution. Videos reach the For You feed through watch time and completion rate.
