Marketing term. Also written post, posting.
Generic web vocabulary that predates social media, inherited from forums and blogs, where a post was one entry in a thread or a feed.
The word hides real differences. An Instagram post can be one image, ten in a carousel, or a Reel, and each is distributed differently. A LinkedIn post can be text, an image or a multi-page PDF. A TikTok post is a video. This matters when someone says "post three times a week" — three Reels is a completely different amount of work from three text posts, and the two reach different people.
Safe. Worth being specific in a brief — "three posts a week" means very little without saying which format.
Any single published item — an image, carousel, video, text update or story. What varies is how each platform distributes each format, which is why the word alone is not a useful planning unit.
It depends far more on format than on a number. Three Reels a week is a serious production commitment; three text posts is not. Pick a cadence you can sustain in the format you are actually making.
Usually counted separately, because it expires after 24 hours and is distributed only to followers rather than through recommendation.
