Where it comes from

A marketing term dating to the early days of Web 2.0, describing reviews, forum posts and uploads. It acquired a second, narrower meaning around 2021 when "UGC creator" emerged as a job title.

How it is actually used

The ambiguity matters commercially. Original UGC is organic — a customer posts about your product unprompted, and its value comes from being unpaid. "UGC creator" content is paid work: a creator produces authentic-looking content that the brand then runs on its own channels, often without the creator posting it at all. Both are called UGC and they are almost opposite things, which causes real confusion in briefs and budgets.

Examples

  • "our UGC converts better than studio shots"
  • "hiring a UGC creator for the launch"
  • "reposting customer UGC every Friday"

Can a brand use it? Safe for brands

Standard industry vocabulary. The one genuine risk is legal rather than tonal: reposting a customer's content without permission is a rights problem regardless of how flattering the repost is.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does UGC stand for?

User-generated content — material created by customers, fans or creators rather than produced by the brand.

What is a UGC creator?

Someone paid to produce authentic-looking content for a brand to use on its own channels. Despite the name, this is commissioned work rather than organic user content, and the creator often never posts it themselves.

Can I repost a customer's photo?

Ask first. Posting publicly does not grant a brand a licence to use someone's content commercially, and a short message requesting permission both solves the rights issue and tends to delight the customer.
