Acronym. Also written fear of missing out, jomo.
Coined in a 2004 business school magazine article and popularised by academic work on social anxiety later that decade. Its rise tracks precisely with the rise of the social feed, which is the mechanism that makes other people's lives continuously visible.
Describes both a feeling and a marketing tactic, and the second use is why it matters commercially. Countdown timers, "only 3 left", and limited drops are all engineered FOMO. The counter-term JOMO — joy of missing out — emerged as a deliberate rejection of it. Audiences have become noticeably better at spotting manufactured scarcity, and calling it out is now itself a content genre.
Safe as a word. Using the tactic is the thing to be careful about: fake scarcity is increasingly recognised, and being caught at it costs more trust than the urgency was worth.
Fear of missing out — the unease that other people are enjoying something you are absent from, heightened by seeing it constantly in a feed.
Joy of missing out. A deliberate counterpoint to FOMO, describing the relief of opting out of an event or of the feed entirely.
Genuine scarcity works. Manufactured scarcity works until someone notices the countdown resets, and the reputational cost of being caught tends to exceed whatever the urgency earned.
