Usenet and early email shorthand, among the oldest abbreviations still in daily use. The variant IMHO — in my humble opinion — is equally old and often used with visible irony.
Functions as a hedge, lowering the stakes of a claim so it invites discussion rather than argument. IMHO is now frequently sarcastic, since the humility is rarely genuine. Both sit at either end of a sentence. In fast-moving threads the marker matters, because unlabelled opinions get read as assertions of fact.
